The Voter ID card, officially the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to every registered voter. Apart from letting you vote, it's accepted across India as valid identity and address proof. Applications and updates are handled through the official voters.eci.gov.in portal and the Voter Helpline mobile app.

  3. Fill personal details — Name, date of birth, gender, and your current residential address in the constituency.
  4. Upload documents — Attach your photo, age proof and address proof.
  5. Submit and track — You receive a reference number to track the application. After verification by the Booth Level Officer (BLO), your name is added to the rolls and the EPIC is issued.

How to Correct or Update Details (Form 8)

Moved to a new address or spotted a wrong spelling or date of birth? Use Form 8:

Log in to the portal, choose Form 8, select the type of request, upload the supporting document, and submit. The change is reflected after BLO verification.

💡 Good to know: You can download a digital copy of your Voter ID — the e-EPIC — as a PDF from the portal once your application is approved, even before the physical card arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a Voter ID?

After successful verification by the Booth Level Officer, a new Voter ID is typically processed within a few weeks. Timelines depend on local electoral roll revision schedules.

Can I have Voter IDs in two places?

No. Holding more than one Voter ID is an offence. If you've shifted, use Form 8 to transfer your registration rather than applying afresh.

Is linking Aadhaar with Voter ID mandatory?

It's currently voluntary. Linking helps remove duplicate entries, but you cannot be refused registration for not linking Aadhaar.
