A passport is one of the most important documents an Indian citizen can hold. It serves as proof of identity, proof of citizenship, and allows international travel. Yet many people find the application process confusing. This guide simplifies it completely.
Types of Passport Applications
Before you begin, identify which type of application applies to you:
- Fresh Passport โ For first-time applicants who have never had an Indian passport.
- Passport Renewal โ For those with an expired or expiring passport (within 1 year of expiry).
- Tatkal Passport โ Urgent processing available for both fresh and renewal applications. Delivered faster at a higher fee.
- Minor Passport โ For children below 18 years of age (validity: 5 years or until age 18, whichever is earlier).
Documents Required
The documents differ slightly based on application type. Here are the common requirements:
| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Aadhaar Card | Proof of Address + Identity |
| PAN Card | Proof of Identity |
| Birth Certificate / Class 10 Marksheet | Proof of Date of Birth |
| Voter ID (if available) | Additional Address Proof |
| Old Passport (for renewal) | Required for reissue applications |
| Recent Passport-size Photographs | White background, 2 copies |
| Marriage Certificate (if applicable) | For name change after marriage |
๐ก Tip: Aadhaar card alone is sufficient as both address and identity proof in most cases. Make sure your Aadhaar has your current address.
