The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified indirect tax system that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty in India. If you run a business, sell goods, or provide services, understanding your GST registration requirement is essential โ failing to register when required can lead to heavy penalties.
Who Must Register for GST?
GST registration is mandatory if your business meets any of the following conditions:
- Your annual turnover exceeds the threshold limit (see below)
- You sell goods or services across state borders (interstate supply), regardless of turnover
- You sell on e-commerce platforms (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, etc.)
- You are a casual taxable person or non-resident taxable person
- You are liable to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism
- You are an input service distributor
Turnover Threshold Limits
๐ก Voluntary Registration: Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can voluntarily register for GST to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) and appear more credible to larger clients and businesses.
